La Mandria Natural Park
30 Settembre 2022The park is a protected natural area located between the Stura di Lanzo and Ceronda streams; thanks to the boundary wall (about 30km) built in the mid-1800s by King Vittorio Emanuele II it is the largest enclosed park in Europe, with its approximately 3,000 hectares area.
The wall was raised to protect the royal apartments that Vittorio Emanuele had built inside the park, intended for his morganatic wife Rosa Vercellana (la Bela Rosin) and for their family. Castello della Mandria has been defined by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and it hosted Queen Elizabeth II of England on a visit to Italy for the Expo in 1961. In 1976 the property was sold to the Piemonte Region which, in 1978, set it up as a park, one of the first regional ones in Italy.
A park with a sporting vocation (horseback riding, archery, mountain biking, golf), in which 4 - 10 - 15 km routes have been created, measured and approved for running. It has also been planned a regulatory athletics track with a unique specification for Europe, the grass surface, an excellent feature for preventing injuries and for rehabilitation.
The course has been realised within La Mandria Natural Park, in the Borgo Castello area, the management headquarters of the Royal Parks, about 1500 meters away from the entrance to the Reggia di Venaria. It is a very technical and spectacular circuit, permanent throughout the entire winter period, with the unique peculiarity of placing landmarks every 100 meters along a 2km path.
La Mandria Natural Park is a regional park and is part of the Royal Parks Authority together with the Stupinigi Park and the La Vauda, Ponte del Diavolo and Monte Lera Natural Reserves.
